Teaching Experience at SMP UMP (Sekolah Menengah Pertama Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto)

Before my first day at SMP UMP, I was so nervous and start to overthink things, I guess it is normal for someone who is still adapting to a new environment. But guess what? It is opposite from what I am thinking! The students and staff were incredibly welcoming, and their warmth made me feel like I'm just at their home. I realized that my worries were unnecessary as I began to enjoy the lively atmosphere and genuine interactions. Every day at SMP UMP has become an opportunity to learn, grow, and build meaningful connections, reminding me that stepping out of my comfort zone was the best decision I could have made.

FLAG CEREMONY

Before I start my journey in teaching, I attended their Flag Ceremony and started their pledge to the flag. During the ceremony, there was a flag bearer, the leaders in every group for a particular day, the students, the faculty and staff, and Quran. They always show their patriotism for the country and their never-ending faith in their religion.

FIRST DAY, FIRST ENCOUNTER

As I stepped into the classroom, I could sense their nervousness as much as I do towards to them. I started introducing myself using basic English and known greetings in conversation. I even told my hobbies, favorites, and foods that I tried in Indonesia. It's so funny to think that when I mentioned that I like K-Pop songs, they started to scream and at that time, I think I made a good impression to them. My nervousness faded and changed with a smile when I received a good response. After my introduction, I was shocked because they gave me a fanmade photocard as a surprise gift, which truly melts my heart. It's so good to feel that you receive any gift from your students, right? You feel so appreciated and loved as their teacher!

TEACHING METHODS

Every teacher starts with a trial-and-error method wherein they observe the unique needs of each student. In my case, during my first day of teaching at SMP UMP, I thought using basic English in discussions would be enough, but it turned out differently than I expected. At that moment, I realized there was something wrong with my teaching method. I reflected and decided to change my approach.

I started translating the materials into their mother tongue with the help of my two resource teachers, Miss Dinda and Miss Hentri. Using this method, my students were able to follow the discussion more effectively. I was thrilled to see how effective these changes were. I also designed my presentations with images of K-Pop idols for the girls and a sports theme for the boys, which they really liked! Additionally, I employed a student-centered approach, facilitating discussions with questions and encouraging them to showcase their knowledge throughout the lesson.

Here are my materials used during my teaching at SMP UMP:

Time Connectives Presentation (Boys)

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

During Friday, SMP UMP English Club always held an extra-curricular activity that provides new perspective in enhancing the skills of the students. Every week, the activity must be done using their skills such as Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking. What I loved about this activity is they let their students showcase their exceptional talent and reach their fullest potential.

During that time, their activity for that week was to create a new and improved product based on what they got in a draw lots and the fun part is, they endorsed it in front of everyone. I was assigned to facilitate the boys, and as my observation, I found out that most of them have a wild imagination in creating things. Who would have thought that someone will create a concept of a moldable pillow and a watch that is made out of trash? They are truly a talented individual! Even in the making of endorsing their product, they were also creative and employed their skills in engaging everyone to buy their product. I can say that they will be a great businessman in the future! All in all, I had fun in facilitating the activity!

SEMINAR ABOUT EDUCATION

SMP UMP held a seminar that focuses on giving a quality education to the students. It tackled the different needs of a students that must be given in every way possible. It also talked about how technology applications helped students to learn and how it must be employed during the discussion. Sharing their expertise made me fell in love in the field of education.

In the seminar, I was invited to speak in front of the professionals about how education runs in the Philippines. I feel so honored to speak and share the information about education—making it a meaningful experience for everyone. This seminar is vital for a future educator like me and for maintaining in giving a quality education for all.

EMBRACING THE CHANGES AND CHALLENGES: GROW EVEN BETTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL

Adapting to a new environment as a foreign teacher has been an incredible opportunity for my personal growth and cultural enrichment. By learning the local culture and language, I’ve been able to build stronger connections with my students and colleagues while showing respect for their traditions. Developing relationships with both locals has given me a valuable support network, helping me navigate challenges along the way. Keeping an open mind has allowed me to see differences as opportunities to learn, and I’ve adapted my teaching style to better meet the needs of my students. Through patience and regular reflection on my experiences, I’ve turned every challenge into a chance to grow and become a better version of myself!
